Students need people they can trust.
Coffee shops have been known to be a “third place” away from work and home where they are seen and known. My weekly coffee ministry has proven to be such a space. One morning a week I offer free coffee on the library porch to Montreat College students and staff.
I use the pour over coffee method which takes a couple minutes to brew so I have time to talk to students and get to know them. I see the same students over and over again and have become a trusted person they often open up to.
This is what I call a “front door” to my ministry. It’s a way to meet me, build a relationship with me, and learn about what my ministry offers.

“Hospitality means primarily the creation of a free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy. Hospitality is not to change people but to offer them space where change can take place.” Henri Nouwen
We have students in our family home for meals, fellowship and studies. Our hope is to minimally offer a safe space where they feel known and loved, but even more so to show them a loving, yet imperfect family, and teach them about Jesus and how he’s called us to live.
2023-24 I plan to host a meal and viewing of the show The Chosen twice a month. The hope is to create fellowship and creative dialogue about Jesus life and calling for us.
It is a joy to get in God’s Word with students and help them gain confidence in reading and understanding the Bible. Sometimes this is in our home, other times on campus. Sometimes with a large group, other times one on one. Whether studying a specific book of the Bible or a theme throughout scripture, this is a favorite part of my ministry with students. God always shows up and reveals Himself through his Word.

It is a joy to walk with any student, but when they give you permission to truly speak into their lives on a weekly basis, it is an honor and something I don’t take lightly. Over the years I’ve gotten to disciple and mentor a number of young women. I don’t have a set curriculum but rather tailor our meetings to their needs and push into areas they want to grow and I see need for it. Some are looking for a mentor to look up to and be encouraged by allowing for a mentor/mentee relationship. Others want true growth in their faith and life and are willing to enter into a discipleship process allowing me to help guide, challenge, encourage, and direct their life.
I love helping students get out of their own bubble and serve others. It creates great opportunity for learning and growth in the students and it blesses those we serve.
Weekly I take students to volunteer with Bounty & Soul, a local nonprofit providing free healthy food to our local community.
On school breaks I have taken and hope to take students on an several day service opportunity. Pictured left is a group that helped with hurricane relief on the NC coast in March 2020 (literally as COVID was shutting down the world!).
